Mahakam River is one of the longest river in Indonesia, after the Barito river, 920 km in length, which empties into the Strait of Makassar. In which there are many typical fish borneo diverse. One of the most famous is Pesut Mahakam.
Pesut Mhakam is one of a kind of mammal dolphin but his life on the river, is an icon Pesut Mahakam Fauna East Kalimantan whose existence is almost extinct, in 1975, reputedly the numbers are still about 1,000 and in 2007 had much dwindled to 50 birds. Its existence apart along the Mahakam river is also on Jempang lake, Lake and Lake Across Semayang. Residents call it fish pasut Kutai, call Bawoi and rural communities in Tana Tidung called Lamut. Dolphins hang food in fish and shrimp in rivers, one dolphins adult can take 2 tons of fish and shrimp per month.
Of course many factors that cause the population of dolphins in the Mahakam drop drastically, besides the limited types of food such as fish and shrimp, river siltation, pollution of rivers due to the level of timber and coal industries, the busy river traffic to the downstream vessel mudiknya large and small motor boats also participated in accelerate the population decline dolphins play. Kaltim should all citizens have the same awareness that animals in the world dolphins are found only these three rivers namely in the Mahakam river (East Kalimantan), the Mekong River that stretches from China, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam) and the river Irawady (Myanmar), the existence of this animal extinct since several years ago in both rivers diatan except in the Mahakam River, it was by the number of choking throats, we should be consistent to work together to keep the ecosystem in order to remain friends with the dolphins mahakan, so Deena and their offspring not only hear it later as a legend.
